When General Motors initiated the redesign of the B-body and C-body for the 1977 model year the de Ville (and all other full-size GMs) shrank by 9.8 in (249 mm) and about 750 lb (340 kg). The new standard engine was a 425 in³ (7.0 L) V8, with the 350 in³ LF9 diesel becoming an option for 1978.

Cadillac de Ville convertibleIn 1977, the first generation of down-sized Cadillacs included mechanically similar de Ville and Fleetwood, with the latter still occupying the top of the lineup. The models primarily differed in minor trim, interior upholstery & equipment levels. These were the first de Ville models to be marketed without fender skirts over the rear wheels.

The 500 in³ V8 engine was discontinued, replaced by a 425 in³ engine. This engine was replaced by the 368 in³ V8-6-4 for 1980, and the 350 in³ LF9 diesel V8 was now an option. Reliability problems with the V8-6-4 engine's computer controls prompted Cadillac to rush their new aluminum-block HT series engine into production for 1982.

Cadillac Coupe de VilleThe d'Elegance package continued for Coupe de Ville in 1977. Three-sided, wrap-around tail lamps were a 1977 feature only (although they would re-appear in 1987). Coupe de Ville's popular "Cabriolet" option included a rear-half padded vinyl roof covering and opera lamps. Sales figures include 138,750 Coupe de Villes.

In addition to a redesigned grille, 1978 saw slim, vertical tail lamps inset into chrome bumper end caps with built-in side marker lamps (Cadillac would retain this "vertical tail lamp inset" design feature for many years, including de Ville through 1999, and Fleetwood through 1996). New for 1978, a "Phaeton" package was optional for de Ville. The Phaeton package featured a simulated convertible-top, special pin striping, wire wheel discs, and "Phaeton" name plates in place of the usual "de Ville" ornament on the rear fenders. Inside were leather upholstered seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. The package was available in Cotillion White (with Dark Blue roof), Platinum Silver (with a Black roof), or Arizona Beige (with a Dark Brown roof). Sales figures included 117,750 Coupe de Villes.

With bigger changes coming in 1980, the 1979 models saw few alterations, one of which was a new grille design. The lineup for the 121.5" wheelbase cars remained the same three models as before. As it had been since the discontinuation of the Calais for 1977, the Coupe de Ville was Cadillac's entry-level model at $11,728. For 1979, the "Phaeton" package was still available in three colors, but with a new color, "Western Saddle Firemist" (with leather interior in "Antique Saddle") replacing the "Arizona Beige" scheme.

In the Martin Scorsese film, Goodfellas, the Western Saddle "Phaeton" package was featured on the 1979 Coupe de Ville driven by Henry Hill (portrayed by actor Ray Liotta).

1980 Cadillac Coupe de Ville1980 saw a major redesign; while maintaining the same wheelbase and interior, the body exterior was redesigned. The Phaeton option was discontinued. Coupe de Ville now wore full, bright side window surround moldings. The chromed-plastic grille held a Rolls-Royce inspired design, with thick vertical bars. The grille cast for 1980 was used again for the 1989 to 1992 Brougham. Late in the 1980 model year, V6 power (in the form of a 4-bbl 252cu engine manufactured by Buick) was offered as a credit option. This became the first sub-V8 (less than 8 cylinders) powerplant offered in a Cadillac since 1914. The standard engine for 1980 was a new 368cu (6.0 liter) V8. Pricing for Coupe de Ville was $12,899.

1979 CADILLAC DEVILLE

Appearance changes for DeVille/Fleetwood included restyled taillamps and a revised front-end look, plus new interior trim.
This year's grille had many more horizontal and vertical bars in its simple crosshatch pattern, designed to accentuate the traditional Cadillac front end look.
"Cadillac" script returned this year to the wide upper grille bar (driver's side).
A thin molding above the grille extended outward, over the headlamps, to wrap around each fender.
Quad rectangular headlamps were outboard of twin vertical rectangular parking lamps.
The crosshatch grille pattern repeated itself in either side of the license plate.
In familiar Cadillac style.
Front fenders held large cornering lamps with clear and amber lenses.
Seven new two-tone body color combinations were available for DeVille (and Fleetwood Brougham), with color-coordinated accent striping.
New brushed chrome wheel covers showed the Cadillac crest on a black background.
Also new: seatbelt chimes, a standard AM/FM stereo radio with digital display, dome light with dual spot map lamps, and optional electrically-controlled outside mirrors.
Interiors were upholstered in Durand knit cloth (six colors) or genuine leather.
Standard fittings included power door locks and windows, six-way power seat, and automatic climate control.
The standard 425 cu. in. (7.0-liter) V-8 had new EGR riser tubes.
A fuel-injected, 195-horsepower version was optional.
The Olds-built 350 cu. in. diesel V-8 became optional in mid-year.
Special editions for 1979 included a Custom Phaeton Coupe and Custom Phaeton Sedan, both offering styling touches intended to remind observers of the "classic" convertibles.
Features included brushed chrome moldings with flush-mounted opera lamps and the Cadillac crest; reduced-size quarter windows; a sporty convertible-like roof; "Phaeton" script on each rear quarter panel; wire wheel discs; accent striping; 45/55 Dual Comfort front seats with leather seating; and leather-trimmed steering wheel.
Phaeton editions came in three color combinations: Cotillion White with dark blue roof and white leather inside; Slate Firemist with black roof and antique state gray leather upholstery; or Western Saddle Firemist with dark brown roof and antique saddle leather seating.
Also on the option list was the DeVille d'Elegance, with new soft Venetian velour upholstery (in choice of four colors) on pillow-style 50/50 seats.
It also had Tangier carpeting, special door pull handles, and "DeVille d'Elegance" script on the glove box and exterior.
Coupe d'Elegance had opera lamps: sedans had three roof-mounted assist straps.
Both bodies had side moldings and accent stripes.
Coupe DeVille also came with a Cabriolet roof treatment, including chrome crossover roof molding, in 17 Elk Grain vinyl colors.
A French seam surrounded the back window and a Cadillac script and crest identified the Cabriolet model.
